I booked this 4 day tour and once I read reviews, I called Railtours directly to ask to have an intown hotel, because some of the B and B's are a little out of town and require walking to get anywhere in town. Apparently if you book thru Viator, you get the B and B's. If you book directly through Railtours, they put you in the nicer hotel which is in the center of town. in addition, I was advised by someone that booked directly that you also get breakfast on board the train included. This is available to all passengers, but you have to pay on board. The B and B we stayed at was very good and Maura was great. She keeps a very clean and well stocked operation. The downside is the walk to town. It wasn't horrible, but once you walk back to the B and B, you think twice about doing it again the same night. If walking isn't a concern, then you're fine. The tours were very good. Knowledgeable guides, and very well organized. People from different tours with different itineraries may travel together, but these guides are on top of it all. They give clear directions and make sure everyone is accounted for. If you only have a limited amount of time, and want to see as much as possible, this is a great way to do it. We didn't have to worry about planning anything, and it was nice to already have your tickets to attractions, and not have to wait in the lines. I was happy with all we got to do in the 4 days we had available.
We had a great time in Ireland during our 4-day tour with the Railtours Ireland. Our tour guide, Brian, is very funny and experienced. We learned a lot about the culture and history of Ireland from him. Although the weather was not that good, it was still a pleasant journey for all of us. Special thanks must also be given to our drivers who took us to our destinations safely and comfortably during poor weather conditions.
Our 4 day trip to the western coast was absolutely beautiful. We had outstanding guides including Brian Duggan, Eion and Jonathan Beaumont who added fun, song and historical perspective to our visit. The only drawback was our B and B accommodation in Killarney. It was definitely inferior to the hotels where other passengers were staying, many who had booked with another carrier. Many people on our bus stayed at The International Hotel in town and they loved their accommodations. Our room should have been for 1 person and was very small. Breakfast was only served one morning. Luckily the tours were wonderful but would hope changes would be made for future travelers.
Outstanding and weather was great. great B and B in Killarney. Tour guides excellent and knowledgeable!! Pubs and food very good. highly recommended!!!
Do yourself a favor and book this trip! Our only regret was that we weren't able to book a longer tour with Railtours. We had three different guides in the four days and they were all wonderful. So friendly and helpful and also knowledgeable about the history of the area. Would do it again!
A great tour to get you to some beautiful sights. We were blessed with 4 days of perfect weather and clear skies, a rarity in Ireland! The rail part of the tour is only on the first and last days with buses used for the day trips to the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula. The tour bases you in Killarney for 3 nights which removes 3-4 hours of rail travel each day if you were to stay in Dublin and do day trips, giving a much more relaxing start time of between 9:30-10am and finish by 5pm for the 2nd and 3rd days and time to explore Killarney. A number of different B and Bs are used - mine was the lovely Drimon House run by Mary who was an amazing host and very welcoming. The room was cosy with an ensuite, electric blanket and television and a separate lounge room where guests could congregate to talk about the day's adventures and watch television. Key point with this tour is to watch the start time on the first day of the tour. 7am is actually the train departure time so you need to be at Heuston Station a good 20min before that! It is actually run by Rail Tours Ireland - The Great Southern and Western Coast tour.
