I was a bit unsure about how to write this review. For the positive, this tour is a convenient and comfortable way to get to Volubilis and Meknes from Fez. You get picked up and dropped off at your riad without problem and the van is comfortable and air conditioned. Volubilis is a cool site to see, and while it was nice stopping by Moulay and Meknes, these two places are maybe less exciting though still pleasant to visit. The driver was also incredibly nice and friendly. However, there were a few downsides. First, the driver didn't really speak french or english very well. I was generally able to understand the gist of what he was saying, but I know others in the small group were struggling a bit. Additionally, the driver is pretty much just that - he is not a guide and did not provide us with specific history or accompany us through the sites. At Volubilis, you can choose to hire a guide at the site to walk you through the history, though I did not. In Meknes, the driver is not allowed to accompany you into the Medina because he is not licensed as a guide, so you are left to walk around on your own. My general feedback is if you're simply looking for a ride to these different sites - this is a solid option, though more adventurous travelers could probably do the same visit for cheaper through a combination of train and shared taxis. If you are looking for a formally guided tour, then this isn't quite it.
Minivan drivers do not switch on AC , it gets pretty hot in the back seat. The itinerary says Climate controlled transport, Morocco Trek Safaris certainly did not deliver this. I took 4 trips with them and none of their drivers switched on the AC when it got really hot.
Small group to Meknès and Volubillis. Meknès is ok Volubillis is great. Long day but good fun. Driver Abdullah was great. Very chilled couldn’t do enough for you.
The driver picked us up in time at our Riad and the ride to the different sights was quite comfortable. If you asked him questions, he answered as good as he knew. Keep in mind that this is not a guided tour in general. The drivers are not guides. They take you to the different places and if you have a nice driver - as we had - he will try to give you some information. At Volubilis we automatically got a guided tour, which makes sense as they can tell you a lot about the mosaics and ruins. Sadly enough a lot of people don't tip them afterwards, which is actually a normal thing to do here in Morocco. Anyways, we went on to Idriss, a small and holy town, where you don't meet so many tourists and continued to Meknes. The driver Always gave us possibilities to stop and take some pictures around. As some girls from our tour had to catch a train and didn't have a clue about the time the tour actually should end, we headed back to Fes a little bit earlier and didn't have so much time in Meknes to spend on our own, which was ok though because we saw quite a lot from the car and by stopping next to sights. As we arrived back in Fes earlier (around 4:15 pm), our driver took is to a good spot outside the Medina for some pictures. All together we had a great time, saw a lot and liked our driver too. Btw. if you are in Fes off season and are a little bit flexible with the date for your tour, book it shortly before by the people in your Riad/Hostel/Hotel...because then it might cheaper than booking it much earlier on the page itself. But this is not a guarantee I give. So, as I said before, keep in mind that your driver is not a guide for the tour. Make some research about the places you go to and enjoy the landscape on your drive and the sights. Then you will definitely enjoy your day a lot!
We had a lovely day walking among the ruins of Volubilis. Wild flowers were in bloom and it was beautiful! It wouldve been nice to have a guide explain things. Our driver didnt have much to say and didnt take us to all the sites. He left us for a few hours in Meknès to walk around on our own. It was a pity that most of the sites were under construction, so we felt we had too much free time on our own!
Volubilis was a wonderful ancient ruin to visit and the drive out there was very pleasant but I am not sure that the drive out there and back is necessarily worth it when you include Meknes as well. There was a lot of construction and renovation going on on one of the major sites of Meknes so we did not get to see it. Our driver and guide, Yusuf, was one of the best things about this tour as he knew a great deal about the history of Volubilis, Meknes, and also Morocco and told us as much as possible during the drive.
This was a really great tour and we had a great guide as well, named Yousef. We also had a great random couple that went along with us which made the tour even better. Make sure you wear some comfortable walking shoes because you will be doing a fairly good amount of walking. You do not need a guide when you get to Volubilis and you can explore everything on your own. It's not a huge place like an amusement park but there is a lot to see. However, I would advise getting a guide they dont cost much and even less if you split the cost with a group. It's worth it to hear the history behind everything and get some information instead of just taking pics with no background info on the place.
This is a great day trip from Fes. The Roman ruins are incredible - in some respects better than in Pompeii. Meknes is a neat town and we were probably the only tourists I saw I always take that as a good sign that I'm off the beaten path. Our guide Hassan was seriously the best. His only concern was for our enjoyment and comfort. You should request him if you're going to take this tour.
We were there in October. It was alright - the tour could have been much better. They cramped about 6 full sized people into an SUV so while the tour and everything were alright, it did really get congested on the back and forth. Also the driver kept turning the AC off which was a bit too much in the heat. Overall - there are better tours in the area and this one definitely would be least preferred.
My guide/driver,Idris,was punctual and welcoming. He's very knowledgable and because it was a very small group tour it was more private. There's no rush for anything even the drive around was smooth with the bumpy roads. I definitely recommend this tour fr a more private and understanding tour!
This tour was not really exactly as described. We visited the roman ruins at Volubilis with a guide which was extra fine and on the way to Meknes we got to see Moulay Idriss from a lookout. The driver said that there was only one thing of interest there mausoleum but we did not stop. On to Meknes and most of the visit was the lunch at the drivers choice of restaurant. A short tour of Meknes with a guide extra again and optional really was only the outside of the palace I think, the square, markets and an old Islamic school. It was not well explained. Then the store next door to the restaurant to buy metal ornaments, technique demonstrated by the guy at the restaurant who was rude when no-one bought anything. The driver slept at the restaurant while we had our tour. I took many tours in Morocco. At the end of the day I think you get what you pay for and a lot of of them steer you into shops and restaurants to buy stuff. Would I take this tour again? No I would probably pay more for a better experience. As an aside do not tour the food market if you are vegetarian or have a stance on animal treatment. Not a judgement just an observation and I would have appreciated a heads up from the guide so I could have not gone there.
