This was just perfect for the short amount of time there.
Pisa is a must do if you get a chance and have enough time. It was a bit of a drive from Florence and we spent a lot of the day in the van. The tour is short and we were on our own to pay/climb the stairs in the leaning Tower. The guide allowed us the history of the grounds and the church was disappointingly closed the day we were there as they were preparing for a concert. We were allowed enough time to take all the cheesy touristy pictures with the leaning tower and we did enjoy ourselves for the day. It's one of those places you have to visit once in your lifetime.
Our time in Florence was limited so we opted to book the 1/2 day afternoon trip so we would not miss the opportunity to see this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our Tour Guides did their best to make the trip a success, but honestly we were somewhat disappointed in the tour as a whole. The bus ride through the Tuscan Countryside was nothing more than a boring drive on a highway devoid of any Tuscan charm other than the occasional field of sunflowers. Once we arrived in Pisa a Guide warned us to look out for pickpockets pre-teen to teenaged girls carrying umbrellas as we departed the bus. We encountered the pickpockets immediately, carefully navigating away from them as well as numerous and aggressive street vendors on the short walk from the parking area to the entrance. Once we finally arrived at the Piazza dei Miracoli the sights of the Baptistry, Pisa Cathedral and the Campanile were incredible! Unfortunately our headsets kept shorting out and we missed most of the information provided by our Guides on these amazing structures. After a brief stop at the foot of the Campanile and a quick tour of the Cathedral we were given free time to explore. As we were walking from the Cathedral to the Baptistry a massive thunderstorm blew up and forced us to take cover inside the Camposanto Monumentale cemetery. The Camposanto was not part of the tour, and we would have missed this beautiful place entirely but for the storm. The weather may have kept us from taking the usual goofy leaning tower tourist photos, but we were rewarded instead with a quiet and uncrowded walk through the Camposanto - a must-see if you visit Pisa. The ride back to Florence was a nerve-wracking, headache-inducing mess from the top deck of the bus as a result of a windshield wiper arm that was grating metal against the window as the wiper itself was missing. We knew this was a short tour when we booked, but it seemed rushed and incomplete. Had the weather been better we may have enjoyed it more, but we also would have missed the Camposanto, which should definitely be on the guided portion of the tour. If you have only a day or two in Florence this is a good and inexpensive tour option, but there is room for improvement.
The tour was nice but not enough free time to get something to eat, shop for souvenirs, or go to the top of the tower.
Seemed a little rushed - should have included a climb up the tower. I was not aware this was even possible until we arrived.
THIS IS ONE TOUR YOU NEED TO GO IF YOU GET THE CHANCE TO VISIT ITALY.
It's worth the trip. Crazy tourist photos are a hoot. It's enough time to see the major sights. Probably not enough time if your hell bent on climbing tower (don't bother) but good
Very interesting. Worth a trip.
