We enjoyed our tour of Highclaire Castle and the town a Bampton. Our tour guide, whose name escapes me at the moment, was fabulous and provided many extra tidbits about the filming and the story lines. A most enjoyable day except for the coach was not the most comfortable. We took the smaller coach thinking we wouldn't be in such a large group, thinking we'd get more personalized attention, which was accurate. However, I ended up sitting all the way in the back in the corner, not enough leg room or seat room, very uncomfortable.
This was a small group tour with a dynamic and very personable tour guide, Eva. Eva was very knowledgeable about the Downtown Abbey series and Highclere Castle...it's history, owners, etc. One of the best tours we have taken. Thank you
This was a great tour and an Amazing Guide!, The trip was all things Downton. episodes on DVR, Games, bits of Trivia, Katherine was super fun, knowledgeable and a great guide, would definitely recommend
The sights to see were enchanting. It was fun taking a step back through Hollywood to the early parts of the 20th Century. The drive back to London was harrowing. I will blame some of it on poorly maintained country roads. I will blame some of it on a woefully lacking suspension system in the bus. And I will put a lot of the blame on them irresponsible driver, who went to fast over many of the streets which resulted in several of the passengers being bounced out of their seats, despite wearing seatbelts. There were several occasions where the passengers yelled and screamed at the driver to slow down. Well I don’t think any of us ever were in danger, his reckless driving left several of the passengers scared.
Our tour was given a rare insight in the filming of Downtown Abbey and the link between its author Julian Fellowes and the real life Downton family. Our very informative guide Kathryn provided an in-depth description of all the filmsets and the characters for the TV series. I would recommend this tour to not only Downton Abbey devotees but lovers television of period TV series in general
We enjoyed a stop in Bampton (the village setting on "Downton Abbey") on our way to Highclere castle. The castle is so much bigger than I expected. The rooms and furnishings look very familiar from the television show. The only disappointment was in not being allowed to take pictures inside the castle. But we learned that the family who owns the castle does actually live there so we were happy to respect their wishes. The gardens were gorgeous in full bloom and we had a lovely day in the countryside.
Our guide was so sweet and knowledgeable. We adored her. We played trivia and that was so much fun! The Abbey was beautiful and just so nostalgic. The landscape and the scenic view was stunning. I would definitely go again. And I would recommend this to anyone who is a history lover or a Downton fan.
Catherine was great. Very knowledgeable about Downton Abbey. Was friendly and entertaining. Would definitely recommend her. The show depicts the castle to a tee. We had a good time.
Catherine Edwards was our tour guide and she was great. The tour was fun with enough time to see Bampton village , castle and the grounds. Definitely recommended.
Loved Amber our tour guide! She is definitely a Downton enthusiast....so knowledgeable and a lot of fun! Whole day was wonderful!
Comfortable, informative and just a great day out of London. Val had so much to offer, even my mom, who had never seen the Downton Abbey series, enjoyed the stories and scenery. The village and castle were delightful!
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour! Our guide, Lottie, was personable and informative, and it was great fun to be with other Downton fans. The day had a nice balance of structured and free time. Highly recommended!
Well described tour and a great driver and tour coordinator. The clips of shows made the entire riding experience enjoyable and caught us up on filming locations.
Amazing tour guide Amber so knowledgeable history show trivia made the drive fun! Perfect amount of time to visit the castle the shop and have a picnic and a snack on the beautiful estate Well worth the money one of the highlights of my two week trip!
I was completely disappointed in this tour, it was nothing like I have experienced on other tours. The guide was not friendly, if not down right rude! The tour consist of the guide flipping through a photo album showing you behind the scene photos. This was extremely boring and cheap. My sister asked the guide where the nearest bathroom was, and he told her to wait he would tell her in a few minutes, this is unacceptable! He should have stopped for 30 seconds and pointed her to the nearest toilet, instead once he felt like it he told her of a coffee shop that has toilets, then proceeded to tell her to buy a coffee! I don't think he need to tell her anything other than where to go. Once at the castle, you are on your own. This tour was extremely overpriced for what you get, I would not recommend it.
When they said small group they meant it. Ours was only six and we were in a small van but being small we got to know each other during the trip which was great. During the trip our guide Stewart entertained us with good stories and even a Downton Abbey trivia contest. He played the intro music to the show as we drove into the castle grounds which was cool. We were able to see the main rooms downstairs and upstairs that were used in the show. The main focus in the rooms was on the family that lives there full time. Pictures of their family everywhere as they should be. We had a nice lunch outside and had time to walk the grounds adjacent to the castle. The tour actually started in the town of Bampton which served as the village outside of the castle on the show. There we saw the buildings used as the Hospital, the church where Matthew and Lady Mary were married. This is an old town and it looks just like the show period setting. Overall a tour well worth the cost if you are a Downton Abbey fan.
I have taken a lot of tours over the years and this one was by far the best. Our tour guide and driver were the best! I loved that we got a lot of time to explore each area we stopped at without being rushed. Definitely recommend for any Downton fan!
For the price of a private tour....I was disappointed....the van was uncomfortable...the tour guide was pleasant and informative but expected her to stay with us during the town visit and castle visit......it was kinda like we were driven there in a personal vehicle, not a comfortable tour van...and told a few interesting stories then set free to discover for ourselves....I loved what we toured....just disappointed in transportation and guide attentiveness. Not worth the extreme cost....
