El edificio que alberga hoy el museo nacional del Prado fue diseñado por el arquitecto Juan de Villanueva en 1785. Fue construido para albergar el Gabinete de Historia Natural, por orden del rey Carlos III.
El primer catálogo del Museo, publicado en 1819, incluía 311 pinturas, aunque en ese momento su colección comprendía algo más de 1510 cuadros de los diferentes Reales Sitios (residencias reales). La excepcional colección real, que representa la base de la compilación del Museo tal como la conocemos hoy, aumentó significativamente en el siglo XVI durante la época de Carlos V y continuó prosperando bajo los sucesivos Monarcas de Habsburgo y Borbón.
La visita se realizará en orden cronológico,
- Comenzando por la sala de exposiciones donde encontraremos las obras maestras de J. Bosch (El Bosco) (1450-1516): La Mesa de los 7 pecados capitales, el Tríptico del carro del heno, Las tentaciones de San Antonio, La extracción de la piedra de la locura y El jardín de las delicias.
A continuación, nos dirigiremos a las salas dedicadas a El Greco (1540-1614): El caballero de la mano en el pecho, La Santísima Trinidad, Cristo abrazado a la cruz y La Anunciación;
- Velázquez (1599-1660): La Adoración, Los Borrachos, Retratos ecuestres, La fragua de Vulcano, El Cristo, Las hilanderas, Las lanzas y Las Meninas.
- Terminaremos con Goya (1746-1828): Retratos de la familia de Carlos IV, Los fusilamientos del 2 de mayo, Las majas y las Pinturas negras.

Met at 8.30am at Julia’s travel - didn’t walk down until 9.10am - entered at 9.25am - rapid tour so we could meet ‘timelines’ and finished at 10.20am. Farewelled our guide and visited the Royal Armoury (very good but everything in Spanish no English and no audioguides) and Cathedral (modern / average) - finished at 11.30.

Terrific tour, much better than the one we took at Louvre. Our guide Macarena was informative and amusing. She picked a nice selection of paintings and gave interesting insights into each. Plus the technology worked well.

We were met by the guide called Myriam (if I heard well). Although here English was good she spoke with such a strong Spanish accent that what she said was mostly unintelligible. She spoke like a robot reciting her text, she did not connect the group she was leading. Besides the communication system she used was a catastrophe: she spoke in a mike too close to her mouth and the earpieces we were given were having a lot of static noise. On top of that the earpiece only feeds into one ear, so the other ear gets all the surrounding noise, which make it even harder to understand the guide. No one gave her a tip in view of this bad service

Enjoyed the tour itself. But some people were unclear on meeting spot and our guide had to hunt them down and we were late starting.

We took this tour of the Prado Museum with Isabella. We do not usually enjoy this type of art, but felt we needed to go to the Prado Museum while in Madrid. She is a wealth of knowledge on the history of Spain, the classics and how the great artists influenced pop artists such as Piscasso and Dali. The 2 hour tour flew by. I wish we could have spent more time at the museum with Isabella.

Without question, the Prado is one of the world's greatest museums. What made my visit so much more was the tour guide. She was very knowledgeable, friendly, interesting and interested in making sure the tour (of 3, including me) a memorable experience.
