The bus tours were great! Although both days were sizzling hot in NYC, the sights were still something to behold. The liberty cruise was the best bit! Buying the tickets from Viator was certainly a bargain.
My friend recommended me to this tour and it was worth trying! Overlooking NYC from the top decker gave me a whole new perspective - one that's different from the movie scenes but as good! The cruise was good too even though it does not dock at the island just cruising around, but taking pictures from afar is better for capturing the whole statue.
It's a great way to get a general overview of NYC even for a Long Islander like myself. The Statue of Liberty Cruise was also pretty good, giving us many chances to take photos near the statue the boat goes near it, but you don't get off as well as the classic downtown skyline view you see in movies. The bus is definitely not the best way to get from point A to point B. The stops are sometimes hard to find at the less busier areas, the bus arrival times are unpredictable no timetable, and the city traffic makes it a tedious way to travel. Definitely use it to get your bearings on the city though.
You can get around much quicker and more efficiently walking and taking the subway. We were stuck in traffic for hours. There is not a personal tour guide like I read on some reviews, it's a automated recording that mentions a few things here and there and plays music the rest of the time. That said, perhaps we were just stuck in traffic for so long there wasn't much to see. We had to take the detour the first day and couldn't even go where we were supposed to and the second day was a bit better, but we decided to jump off and take the subway to where we wanted to go.
Buses are old. They are not well signed around the Times Square Area. More evident around midtown 42nd street. Best go with another bus company as they seem to be everywhere. Also, the free Liberty Cruise ran out of fuel just as we were on the return approach to the Statue . We had to turn back, no refund, no photos, Nothing. Very poor.
This was really good and well worth the money paid for. The tour bus driver's name is Byron. He is knowledgeable and takes the time to stop the bus, come upstairs and share important information about the city. The Statue of Liberty boat tour was also great. We took the 3:00 P.M. They had organized it rather well. The only drawback to the tour is that the bus that took us to the boat tour was totally open-top. Taking into account the time of the year and time of the day, one could expect the tour organizers to have provided for covered double-decker.
