Visit: Powerhouse Museum, 500 Harris St Ultimo Haymarket, Sydney, New South Wales 1238 Australia
Exhibitions and programs are based on the ideas and technologies that have changed our world, and the stories of the people who have created and inspired them. An ever-changing program of temporary displays complements a range of permanent exhibitions, while education and public programs, new technologies and creative interactions bring the collection to life.
There are regular tours and demonstrations, performances, workshops, forums and other special events held throughout the museum, plus two cafes, and a state-of-the-art playground in the museum’s courtyard.
Not to be missed:
Mars Yard
Explore the surface of Mars! The Mars Yard is a simulated Martian landscape created with scientific accuracy, which is part of a research project called Mars Lab.
You can also meet our robotic rovers at the Mars Yard daily:
• Weekdays, 11am & 1pm
• Weekends, 11am, 12 noon and 1pm
Experimentations
Experimentations and experimenting both start from everyday experience. How does a battery work? What is lightning? This exhibition shows how scientific and technological breakthroughs have answered questions like these and changed many of our ideas about everyday phenomena.
In Experimentations YOU become the scientist, engineer, thinker, artist and inventor.
Discover marvellous machines, get creative in the Tinkering Zone, get zapped in the electric chair, play with sound and light waves.
Space
What is it like to live and work in the weightless environment of space? What do astronauts eat? How do they sleep? And how do they go to the bathroom?
Find out all the answers in the Space exhibition, including the Zero Gravity Space Lab where you can experience the illusion of weightlessness. The Space Lab is the highlight of the ‘Living and working in space’ section where Australian astronaut Dr Andy Thomas and his wife and fellow astronaut Dr Shannon Walker guide you through a visit to the International Space Station (ISS).
Transport
In the Powerhouse Museum transport galleries, move among the kinds of vehicles that have shaped our way of life. You’ll see some grand and gracious objects including the Catalina Flying boat in which Captain P G Taylor surveyed an air route between Sydney and Valparaiso, Chile, in 1951; the luxuriously appointed Governor’s railway carriage of 1891; and a 1987 Toyota Supra, sectioned and powered to reveal its construction and operation. See the vehicles that carry us from cradle to grave including a pram, a penny farthing bicycle, boats, a hearse, and many more.
